Leafleting in Croydon: what works on busy streets

Croydon is a big, busy borough with a wide mix of homes, from town centre flats to quiet suburban roads in Purley, Coulsdon and Sanderstead. That variety means a leaflet campaign works best when it is planned around the right streets.

A campaign that suits one part of the borough may not suit another. This guide looks at how to match your area to your offer, how to plan for flats and busy streets, how to write a leaflet that gets noticed and how to measure what comes back.

Match the area to your offer

A takeaway near central Croydon will want the flats and terraces close by. A builder or landscaper may do better in roads with larger houses and gardens. Think about who buys from you, then choose the neighbourhoods where they live.

It helps to write down a simple picture of your typical customer before you choose any streets. Do they rent or own? Do they have a garden, a driveway or children at school? A tutor may focus on family roads near schools. A cleaning company may look at larger homes. An estate agent may want a mix of areas to find both buyers and sellers. Once you know who you are looking for, the right streets become easier to pick.

Plan for flats

Blocks of flats can have shared entrances or restricted access. We will flag these when we plan your round, so you know what to expect.

If flats make up a big part of your target area, tell us at the start. It is better to know in advance which blocks may be hard to reach than to find out after the campaign has gone out.

Use hand to hand distribution in busy spots

In busy areas, handing leaflets directly to people can work well for events, openings and offers. We can arrange this on the days and at the times you choose.

Hand to hand works best when the leaflet gives people a reason to act soon, such as an opening day offer or an event that weekend. It can also sit alongside a door drop, so people see your business on the street and then again at home.

Keep the message short

People on busy streets glance at a leaflet for a few seconds. Lead with your offer, keep the text short and make your contact details easy to find.

  • Use one headline that says what you offer.

  • Add one reason to act now, such as an end date.

  • Make your phone number, website or address large and clear.

  • Use the back of the leaflet for detail, not the front.

For paper and size choices, see our flyer printing page. If you run a food business, our menu printing page covers takeaway menus.

Track your response

Use a Croydon-specific offer code so you can see how well the area responds before you expand.

If you are covering several neighbourhoods, consider a different code for each, or ask every new customer where they live. That way you can compare areas rather than judging the whole campaign as one result.

A worked example

Here is a hypothetical example of how a Croydon campaign might be planned.

A new pizza takeaway opens near central Croydon. The owner chooses the flats and terraces within the delivery radius first, because those homes are closest and most likely to order. The menu has the phone number and ordering link on every panel, plus a first order offer with an end date. On the opening weekend, a team hands leaflets out in a busy spot nearby. The offer code on the door drop menus is different from the one on the hand to hand leaflets, so the owner can see which method brought in more orders. The next drop is planned around the streets that ordered most.

Common mistakes in Croydon campaigns

Treating the borough as one area. Central Croydon and the suburban roads of Purley or Sanderstead are very different. Plan by neighbourhood.

Ignoring access. Flats with secure entrances can affect coverage. Raise them early.

Too much text. A crowded leaflet is hard to read on a busy street.

No way to measure. Without a code or a question, you cannot tell which streets responded.

Nearby Surrey areas

If your customers also live just over the border, we deliver across Surrey too, including Caterham, Redhill and Epsom.
